Learn Mandarin Chinese verbs to want, to like and to buy here!

In this lesson you’ll learn how to say three basic verbs in Mandarin Chinese: Want, Buy and Like and related gramar. After this lesson you’ll have the basic skills to go out shopping and speak Chinese! What’s great about learning the verbs in Mandarin Chinese is that there are no complicated tenses or conjugations as there are in English and other western European languages. Also, you’ll see that the word order of these sentences is the same as English, which will make your life much easier!

The first words you’ll learn in the lesson are wǒ (我) and nǐ (你). Check out my previous lesson personal pronouns to review this vocabulary.

Next you’ll learn how to say “to want”: yào (要). Make sure you get the fourth tone right. Next you’ll learn how to say “what”: shén me (什么). Notice the me has a neutral tone. Thus, it does not rise or fall.

Now you’ll learn how to make a sentence. nǐ yào shén me? (你要什么?). Wǒ yào kā fēi (我要咖啡.)

You can also say, Wǒ yào chá (我要茶).

Now you’ll learn how to say, “I want to buy”. Do do this you first say wǒyào, I want. Then you’ll need to add the verb for “to buy”: mǎi (买). Notice it uses the third tone. If you switch to the fourth falling tone you get mài (卖), which means, “to sell”.

The final verb you’ll learn here is “to like”: xǐhuān (喜欢). So, to say “What do you like?” you say, ní xǐ huān shén me? (你喜欢什么). An example of a response to that question would be, “I like coffee”, or wǒ xǐ huān kā fēi (我喜欢咖啡).

Now you can practice these Chinese sentences and verbs many times with Benny’s fantastic YouTube video!

In this quick video you'll learn how to say hungry in Mandarin Chinese. You'll also learn how to say to also, to wait, to want or wish for and to know in Mandarin.

In this lesson you’ll learn how to say hungry in Mandarin and more useful vocabulary with our favorite cat, Princess and her kitten! Hi guys! Sorry my voice was so quiet when making this video to learn to speak mandarin Chinese online! I did not want to scare the cats! As I mentioned in the video, the little kitten passed away the next day. I am still very sad about that. But, the kitten inspired me to make the video to teach Mandarin Chinese online. So, after much thought I decided that I would still share this Mandarin Chinese lesson. In the following paragraphs you’ll learn the characters and pinyin for the vocabulary I teach in this lesson.

How to say hello everybody this is your Mandarin Chinese teacher in Chinese

We say: dà jià hǎo wǒ shì dà wèi nǐ mén zhōng wén lǎo shī (大家好我是大卫你们中文老师). Dà jià means everybody and literally means “big family”. Zhōng wén (中文) is one of several ways to describe Chinese. The first character zhong means “central” or China (eg, Middle/central Kindom). Lǎo shī (老师) is teacher. Actually Lǎo shī is considered an honorable title in China. So, I don’t know if I’m worthy enough of being called Lǎo shī.

How to say Kitten in Mandarin Chinese

To say kitten you say: xiǎo māo 小猫 = kitten. Xiǎo (小) means little or small. Make sure you get the third dipping tone right.

How to say but she is very shy in Mandarin Chinese

We say: dàn shì tā hěn hài xiū (但是他很害羞). Dàn shì means but. Remember, emphasize the fourth tone on those two chracters. To say shy you say hài xiū = 害羞. Be sure to make the tones fourth falling tone then first tone.

How to say Do you know what he’s trying to find in Mandarin Chinese

You say: ní zhī dào tā zài zhǎo shén me ma? (你知道他在找什么马). Zhī dào (知道) means to know. It literally means to have knowledge of the “Way” – as in Taoism. To find you say zhǎo (找). Make sure you get that third dipping tone right. If you use the fourth falling tone you’ll be saying photograph.

How to say he’s looking for mommy’s nipple

You say: Tā zài zhǎo mā mā de nǎi tōu （她再找妈妈的奶头）. Zài is a particle placed before the very to indicate that the person doing the verb is in the process of doing it. It’s the same as adding an “ing” to the end of a very in English. To say nipple you say: nǎi tōu (奶头) which literally means milk head.

How to say Yes! Why? Because he wants to eat! in Mandarin Chinese

You say: Shì de wěi shé me ne? Yīn wèi tā yào chī fàn (是的, 为什么呢？因为他要吃饭). Wěi shé me (为什么) means why. Yào (要) means to want to in the immediate sense like you want to do something right away.

How to say to be hungry in Mandarin Chinese

To say hungry you say: è = 饿. That “e” sounds like when somebody hits you in the stomach. To say hungry you can also say: dù zi è le (肚子饿了). Dù zi (肚子) means stomach. Le (了) is simply a particle that describes that there is a situation occuring.

How to say she does not want to eat anymore in Mandarin Chinese

You say: Tā bù xiǎng chī le (他不想吃了). Xiǎng (想) means to wish or desire to. It’s not as strong as the Yao (fourth tone) we learn above. Here the le (了) particle indicates that the situation has occured and is finshed or completed.

How to say she wants to rest in Mandarin Chinese

Tā yào xiū xí le (他要休息了) Again, the yào (要) here indicates that the kitten wants to sleep immediately.

How to say Also in Mandarin Chinese

To say also you say yě (也). Make sure you put stress on the third dipping tone.

How to say wait in Mandarin Chinese

You say: Děng yixià. Děng (等) means to wait. Yixià is added after verbs in Mandarin Chinese to indicate that the action will take place soon and quickly.

How to say to speak in Mandarin Chinese

To say to speak you say: Jiǎng huà = 讲话= to speak. Make sure you get that third tone right on the Jiǎng and the fourth tone right on the hu.

I hope this video and tutorial for learning Mandarin Chinese online helped you to improve! I look forward to reading your comments below!

One of the funnest aspects of Mandarin Chinese is the way words of foreign languages are written out. Here’s an example: How to say and write out President Obama in Mandarin: ōu bā mǎ zǒng tǒng (奥巴马总统). You see, in Chinese we take characters which match or correspond with the sound in the foreign language.

Learn how to say to say to be in Mandarin Chinese.

Today you’ll learn how to say to be in Mandarin Chinese. There is only one character you need to know: 是, or shì pronounced with the fourth falling tone. There are only two rules you need to know. Rule No. 1: Use shì when describing a noun. For example, 我是大卫 (wǒ shì dā wèi). Since David is a person or a noun you must use the character shì to represent “to be”.

Rule No. 2: Do not use shì when describing an adjective. For example: 大卫很高兴 (dà wèi hěn gāo xìng), which means “David is very happy”. You see, happy is an adjective so there is no need for the character shì.

I hope this video and explanation helped. Please feel free to leave your comments.

Learn How to Count To Ten in Mandarin Chinese in This Video Tutorial.

Learn Mandarin Chinese Online – How to Count to Ten in Mandarin

The number system in Mandarin Chinese is surprisingly easy. There are two interesting things to note here. Firstly, once you learn the counting system in Chinese you’ll be able to learn the number systems in other Asian languages such as Japanese, Korean and Thai very easily as they are largely based on the Chinese counting system. Secondly, you’ll notice find that the counting system and numbers in Mandarin Chinese are actually EASIER than in other western European languages such as French and German!

So, here goes with the tutorial:

To say the number one (1 )you say yī (一) with the first flat tone. It sounds kind of like “yeeeee”.

The number two (2) èr (二). Basically it’s kind of like the “urgh” sound you make when you’re angry at something or somebody!

The number three (3) sān (三) is extremely easy – just remember to use the first flat tone.

The number four (4) is pronounced sì (四) and you must remember to use that fourth falling tone. If you goof up and use the third dipping tone you will be saying “dead” or “death” and the Chinese people will look at you in a very funny way!

The number five (5) is pronounced wǔ (五) and uses that third dipping tone. The number five sounds like the common Chinese surname (lastname) Wu so this one is quite easy. Note the number 5 in Mandarin and the surname Wu (吳 – i think i got that right!) are writting in totally separate characters.

The number six (6) is pronounced lìu and sounds like “Leo” – the Thai beer. Remember to use the fourth falling tone. If u goof up and use the second rising tone you’ll be saying to stay.

The number seven (7 ) is pronounced qī (七) with the first flat tone. Remember that Q in Chinese pinyin sounds kind of like “ch”

The number eight (8) bā (八) is really easy – just say ba and make sure you use the first flat tone.

The number nine (9) jiǔ (九) is a bit tricky. Remember to use that third dipping tone.

The number ten (10) shí (十) uses the second rising tone. It is absolutely essential that you stress that rising tone. If you goof up and use the fourth falling tone you’ll be saying the word for “to be” or the chinese identifier word, shi – 是!

In this video tutorial you'll learn how to say sorry or excuse me in Mandarin Chinese.

Learn How To Say Excuse Me or Sorry in Mandarin Chinese

Here you’ll learn how to say Sorry or Excuse Me in Mandarin Chinese. To say sorry you must pronounce three characters: Duì Bù Qǐ. Written in Chinese characters you get: 对不起.

The first character Duì (对) literally means right or correct. The second characte, Bù (不) means no and is used to make sentences negative. The third character Qǐ (起) menas to rise or get up. If you string all three characters together: Duì Bù Qǐ you get “Sorry”.

Watch this video over and over until you feel comfortable saying it. By the way, while we say “Sorry” quite often in Western culture you might not hear it so much in China or Asia. However, it’s still a good word to know when your traveling or living in Mandarin-speaking areas.

Also, in this video I’ve thrown in an added BONUS: You’ll learn how to say sorry in Taiwanese. It is very easy: Pai-Say. Just remember, “What did the pie say?” – and you’ll know how to say sorry in Taiwan.
The first character you must say is the character for I, or wo (我) which is pronounced with the third dipping tone.

The second character is for “Love” (爱) and is pronounced “Ai”. It is pronounced with the fourth falling tone. The next character is for you and is pronounced ni (你), again, with that third tricky dipping tone. So, when you put it all together you get “Wo Ai Ni”, or 我爱你, or I love you!
