Okay – to ask for somebody’s phone number in Chinese you say: qǐng wèn nǐ de diàn huà hào mǎ jǐ hào (请问你的电话号码几号?).


Let’s break it down. Qǐng wèn (请问) means or excuse me or literally “please ask”. Nǐ de (你的) means your. that de is the possessive in Mandarin Chinese. Diàn huà (电话) means phone and hte characters literally mean “electric word”.  Hào mǎ (号码) menas number. Be sure you get the tones right here – fourth tone, third tone. If you confuse them and use third tone, first tone you’re asking “okay? (好吗?)” I know it’s tough but you need to try to get your tones right from the very beginnning. Finally, jǐ hào (几号) means “what number” or literally “how many number.

So, qǐng wèn nǐ de diàn huà hào mǎ jǐ hào – What’s your phone number?

The second character is for “Love” (爱) and is pronounced “Ai”. It is pronounced with the fourth falling tone. The next character is for you and is pronounced ni (你), again, with that third tricky dipping tone. So, when you put it all together you get “Wo Ai Ni”, or 我爱你, or I love you!
